James Marsters Discusses 'Dragonball'

It looks like Buffy the Vampire Slayer alum are popping out of the woodwork today. Empire Online reports that in an interview with TV Guide, James Marsters (better known as Spike) gave them a few tidbits about the upcoming big-screen version of the classic anime, Dragonball Z. (Marsters plays Piccolo, the main baddie in the story.) The actor told TV Guide: "Oh, Dragonball is the coolest television cartoon in the last 50,000 years. It's got a Shakespearean sense of good and evil. The movie has incredible action scenes with characters with unbelievable powers. It's going to be really visually exciting." While I've got nothing against Dragonball Z, 'Shakespearean' is a bit of an overstatement. News of the film adaptation first hit back in October, and the casting notices have been appearing fast and furious ever since. Joining Marsters is Chow-Yun Fat as Master Roshi, Justin Chatwin (War of the Worlds) as Goku, and Emily Rossum as Bulma. James Wong adapted Akira Toriyama's original manga, and his script focuses on a "warrior alien who protects the Earth from an endless stream of rogues bent on dominating the universe and controlling mystical objects known as Dragon Balls." When Wong first signed on to write and direct, it didn't exactly go over all that well with fans. Well, at least Wong has Marsters' vote of confidence; on the official Dragonball site, Marsters said: "I'm not really allowed to talk about any of the movie details, but I can say that (writer/director) James Wong is obviously a gifted and insightful director." Dragonball is currently shooting on location in Mexico, and is set for release on August 15th.

I'll assume you're reffering to the eyes. In manga and anime the eyes are almost always exaggerated as the artists use the eyes primarily to convey the emotion of the drawn characters.
Just because they have large eyes doesn't always mean they're non-asian.

For the record... Goku wasn't asian. He was Sayain. Totally different race than human. I have no problem with a white guy playing him but honestly, does anyone think this movie will be any good?

This movie has a 90% chance of being awful.
But I have to pick a point with you: I hate the "Goku is an alien, so its okay that he's white." arguement. It irritates me to no end. Mainly because if the shoe was on the other foot it wouldn't work. If WB decided to make a Superman movie with a non-white person playing the lead using the argument, "Superman is an alien, so it doesn't matter what he is" it would be laughable.
The main character, Gokou, predates Dragonball. He's from a Chinese fairytale called, "Journey into the West" which is practically ancient and well known throughout Asia. More to the point, Gokou, if you'll excuse the extremely crude analogue, is Asia's "Superman". I'm not racist, but casting a caucasian in this role is not true to the source material in my opinion.

Weellll....have you seen the TV series "Lois and Clark"? Ironically, Superman is part Asian. I can't remember anymore, but he's either half or quarter Korean. And it definitely shows. So there ya go. 'Tis already been done. Heck, they were thinking of casting Nicolas Cage as Superman a few years back, weren't they? This doesn't seem so unreasonable. I'm more concerned with acting ability, and martial arts ability myself. Also, about Goku being cast as a Japanese guy- well, I dunno, but I've watched a fair amount of anime, and the Japanese do seem to draw many western features in their characters. I've heard this isn't so, but...eh. I bet they're more concerned with the basics- good acting, good martial arts, staying true to the story, etc. I haven't seen anything Mr. Chatwin has been in, so...can't comment on that, really. :D

About James Marsters comment that Dragonball has a Shakespearean sense of right and wrong...I actually agree. Yeah, there are outrageous power levels, etc. It perhaps got over the top sometimes. But the core story, the core characters...amazing. And classic. Goku is a remarkable character, and will be very hard to pull of convincingly. About Piccolo...my personal favorite...I'm happy to know that Mr. Marsters is a fan! And I hope they make him as intelligent as he was in the manga. Though I suppose this is Piccolo Snr. not Piccolo Junior...
Hmm. I wonder if there will be a sequel? My mom really really wanted to see Vegeta!
